HUMMINGBIRD INDIGENOUS FAMILY SERVICES MISSION AND VISION

Healthy Indigenous babies being born into healthy Indigenous families being supported by healthy Indigenous communities. At Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services, we believe that attachment and culture are the foundations of healthy communities and that through rematriation (Returning the Sacred to the Mother), we can heal historical trauma.

Through culturally relevant support during the perinatal period, we reduce the personal, cultural, and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect Indigenous parents while strengthening the bond between parents and connections to the community.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The HIFS Cultural Advisory Council are Indigenous community members who provide cultural and experiential support and guidance to the Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services. Within this contracted position, the cultural advisory council will provide leadership and counsel within one of three different sub-committees:

  • The Nest Program
  • Pilimakua Family Connections Program
  • Cultural & Community Engagement

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet monthly in-person for 2-3 hours with other advisory council members and Hummingbird Staff at our Cultural Advisory Council Dinners
  • Provide cultural and experience-based guidance to Hummingbird programs, especially when it comes to supporting clients and community
  • Duties as assigned within their specific sub-committee: some text
    • The Nest Program:
      • During the Cultural Advisory Council Dinners, vote and make decisions on programmatic questions and relative-based situations. Respond via email and go to additional virtual meetings as needed.
      • During the Cultural Advisory Council Dinners, support and provide guidance for staff, especially around decisions of eligibility for program participants, special situations, Hold Harmless Fund requests, Evaluation and Learnng support requests or other issues that may arise during the program.
      • Involvement in one of The Nest’s Components (at about 2-4 hours/month), choosing ONE of the following:
        • Develop or co-develop and facilitate 2 hour leadership or cultural workshop for Nest Leadership Program participants
        • Connect staff with Nest Leadership Program workshop facilitator
        • Lead a virtual cultural activity for Nest relatives
        • Attend a Storytelling artist in residence event and/or support in Storytelling Nest Docuseries
    • Pilimakua Family Connections Program - Pilimakua Wakan/Kupuna:
      • During the Cultural Advisory Council Dinners, advise the Pilimakua Program Manager and Staff on programming and questions they have
      • Involvement in one of Pilimakua’s Components (at about 2-4 hours/month), choosing ONE of the following:
        • Go to the Monthly Community Connection Events and prep/lead a cultural activity
        • Do 1-2 Home Visits per month
        • Go to our Indigenous Parents Group once a month and prep/lead a cultural activity
        • Consult with Pilimakua Staff virtually for 2-4 hours per month
    • Cultural & Community Engagement:
      • During the Cultural Advisory Council Dinners, advise the Cultural & Community Engagement Manager and Hummingbird Staff on programming and questions they have.
      • Involvement in one of Pilimakua’s Components (at about 2-4 hours/month), choosing ONE of the following:
        • Support Policy Change discussions and advocacy work via social media posts, writing letters, forming strategy etc.
        • Do 1-2 Home Visits per month for BirthKeepers
        • Lead a cultural activity at an all-Hummingbird event
        • Consult with Hummingbird Staff virtually for 2-4 hours per month

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • 15 or more years of experience living in or working closely with American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Pacific Islander communities
  • Knowledge or experience in: birthing, perinatal support, early childhood education, home visiting, social work, family services, reproductive health, parenting, health needs for Indigenous communities
  • Working knowledge of historical trauma and colonization
  • Strong background in the perinatal period for our Indigenous (AI/AN/NH/PI) communities
  • Work independently with regular contact/coordination with their sub-committee’s Program Manager.
  • Ability to understand and resolve complex problems.

CANDIDATE RECRUITMENT:

COMPENSATION:

This is a part-time contract position. There will be a required 2-3 hour council dinner meeting once a month; some months you may spend time outside of meetings providing consulting or reviewing materials no more than 5 additional hours per month.

You will be provided a $600 monthly stipend for your time.

LOCATION:

Our Cultural Advisory Council Dinners will be in-person at King County on the first Tuesday of every month from 6-8 PM PST. Position requires working at community events and home visits throughout King, Pierce, and South Snohomish Counties.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Variable.

  • Virtual Orientation: Friday, September 20, 2024 @ 3-4 PM PST.
