HUMMINGBIRD INDIGENOUS FAMILY SERVICES MISSION AND VISION

Healthy Indigenous babies being born into healthy Indigenous families being supported by healthy Indigenous communities. At Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services, we believe that attachment and culture are the foundations of healthy communities and that through rematriation (Returning the Sacred to the Mother), we can heal historical trauma. 

Through culturally relevant support during the perinatal period, we reduce the personal, cultural, and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect Indigenous parents while strengthening the bond between parents and connections to the community.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Pilimakua Home Visiting Program provides Indigenous-centered services to support the physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and cultural health of the child and the whole family provided within their home and/or a community location. Our Pilimakua Home Visiting Program is voluntary, free-of-cost, and offered to Indigenous families (American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) with expectant babies, new babies, and young children living in King, Pierce, and South Snohomish Counties. ‍We are centered around pili, the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi word for connection, and makua, which is the Native Hawaiian/Kānaka Maoli tradition of parenting and caregiving as a whole generation. Our Pilimakua Home Visiting Program strives to support Indigenous families in expanding our makua circles with their Home Visitor, our Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services organization, and our whole community. 

The Pilimakua Home Visitor supports Indigenous children and Indigenous families along their prenatal and early childhood journey through Reciprocal Knowledge Sharing of culture and language reclamation & sustainability, caregiver mindfulness & self-compassion, and child development. The Pilimakua Home Visitor provides direct services to the children and families within the four main components of Pilimakua Home Visiting Program: 

1. Home Visits: Weekly, biweekly, or monthly visits with Pilimakua Families to discuss topics around the family and child, do activities, and hold space. 
2. Parent Groups: Frequent structured groups for Indigenous Parents & Caregivers to come together to connect, hold, and learn with each other.
3. Resource Connection: Working with Pilimakua Families to connect to different resources to support any family needs (basic, cultural, etc.).
4. Community Connection Events: Events with the community to bring Indigenous families together and do cultural activities rooted in child development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Overall

• Engage Pilimakua Families in reciprocal knowledge sharing by disseminating accurate and culturally-sustaining information to families and lifting up the families’ own knowledge. 
• Work with Pilimakua Families to connect to different resources to support any family needs (basic, cultural, social, etc.).
• Utilize the following Pilimakua Core Strategies to better help families: Family-Guided Routines-Based Intervention, Harm Reduction Approach, and Motivational Interviewing. 

Home Visits

• Conduct routine, high-quality home visits with Indigenous families to learn together about culture and language reclamation & sustainability, caregiver mindfulness & self-compassion, and child development through discussion, intergenerational activities, and resource connection.
• Create and/or differentiate activities and lessons for the home visits around culture and language reclamation & sustainability, caregiver mindfulness & self-compassion, and child development.
• Develop plans of support with each family that includes consistent home visits, connection to community resources, and whole-family support.
• Complete initial and ongoing child and family screenings and assessments as required by our program. 
• Engage each family in collaboration using the information and data from their screenings and assessments to modify their plan of support, discuss family goals, and select relevant reciprocal knowledge sharing and activities.
• If possible and needed, attend other meetings with our Pilimakua Home Visiting Families (ex. Child Welfare Services, education/school, etc.).

Data Entry

• Maintain updated files, documentation on individual children and families following program requirements and maintain tracking, documentation and confidentiality according to program standards. 
• Complete Data Entry and Reports correctly and in a timely manner.

Parents Groups & Events

• Promote, develop, and support the Pilimakua Indigenous Parents Groups. This will include a Circle of Security Parenting Pilimakua Indigenous Parents Group.
• Promote, develop, and facilitate the Monthly Pilimakua Indigenous Parents Community Connection Events.

Additional Roles & Responsibilities

• Maintain Confidentiality of all records, and communications concerning the identity of Home Visiting Relatives/clients.
• Works independently and maintains a schedule for home visits and other Pilimakua Program events and activities. 
• Maintain clear communication with the Pilimakua Home Visiting Program Manager and other team members. 
• Assist in the recruitment and engagement of families by conducting outreach. 
• Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as directed by the Pilimakua Home Visiting Program Manager.
• Keep all trainings up to date as required by contract and evidenced based practice requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Education Requirement: Must meet at least ONE of the following requirements:

• 10+ years of work experience with young children and families.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Social Services PLUS 5+ years of work experience with young children and families.
• Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Social Services PLUS 1+ years of work experience with young children and families.

• 15-20 years of personal and/or professional experience working closely with American Indian, Alaska Native, Kānaka Maoli/Native Hawaiian, and/or Pasifika communities.
• Experienced in relationship-based approaches in home visiting, such as: Family-Guided Routines-Based Intervention, Harm Reduction Approach, and Motivational Interviewing. 
• Skilled at building rapport with individuals and families while respecting family choice and maintaining appropriate boundaries and cultural competency.
• Experienced in working with pregnant people, newborn infants, and families with young children.
• Have knowledge and experience around Pilimakua Curriculum Themes: Indigenous Language and Culture Reclamation & Sustainability, Caregiver Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, and Child Development.
• Sensitive awareness of diverse cultural, socio-economic, and lifestyle backgrounds.
• Strong verbal and written communication and skills.
• Work independently with regular contact / coordination with the Pilimakua Home Visiting Program Manager.
• Ability to understand and resolve complex problems.
• Ability to work with conflicting deadlines.
• Other Logistical Requirements

• Operates a personal vehicle to drive between various work sites. 
• Must have access to a car, valid driver's license and insurance (mileage will be reimbursed).
• Must have a flexible schedule and supportive lifestyle to meet the needs of the program. Occasional weekend and evening work. 
• Pediatric CPR/First Aid and Blood-borne certificate. Must maintain it as a condition of continued employment.
• HIPAA certification upon hire.
• Must pass a background investigation, including relevant criminal history.

COMPENSATION:

Part Time salary exempt is $33,750  plus .5 FTE of a Monthly Health and Tech Stipend. 

LOCATION: 

We are currently working remotely, with some in-person meetings in South Seattle and North Seattle. Position requires working at community events and home visits throughout King, Pierce, and South Snohomish Counties.
