Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services Mission and Vision:
Healthy Indigenous babies being born into healthy Indigenous families being supported by healthy Indigenous communities. At Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services, we believe that attachment and culture are the foundations of healthy communities and that through rematriation (Returning the Sacred to the Mother) we can heal historical trauma.
Through culturally relevant support during the perinatal period, we reduce the personal, cultural, and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect Indigenous parents while strengthening the bond between parents and connections to the community.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
We are seeking a BirthKeeper for Hummingbird Indigenous BirthKeepers. The ideal candidate, under the supervision of the BirthKeeper Department Supervisor, is exceptionally organized, capable of prioritizing multiple tasks, collaborative, and maintains a high level of attention to detail. Hummingbird Indigenous BirthKeepers is a culturally responsive, full spectrum, Indigenous doula program providing free-of-cost services to pregnant people who identify as American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AI/AN/NH/PI) living in King, Pierce, and Snohomish County, thereby reducing the personal, cultural, and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect Indigenous parents while strengthening the bond between parents and connections to the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serve as a trained and experienced doula providing physical, emotional and informational support to families throughout the perinatal period.
- Be committed to work collaboratively with in-house staff, clinical providers, community partner organizations, social workers, elders, community members, etc.
- Follow department requirements which includes submitting documentation forms in our Apricot database system within 48 hours of a relative engagement.
- Adequately prepare for all home visits.
- Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance to ensure a consistent focus on family support. All visits by default are in-person unless requested by the client.
- Maintain appropriate and professional relationships with all department staff and families through frequent communication (e.g. in-person, phone, text, email, or other written correspondence).
- Attend regular one-on-one meetings with department leadership.
- Must work in the office on Mandatory Mondays for meetings and administrative time for Apricot data, receipts and mileage forms.
- Update and maintain yearly training and profile forms.
- Assist in planning/hosting and provide outreach/education at community-wide cultural events.
- May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions during portions of the work day.
ADDITIONAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain confidentiality of all records and communications concerning the identity of relatives (clients).
- Work independently and maintain a schedule for all responsibilities.
- Maintain Google calendar for full transparency and ease of scheduling (e.g. home visits, trainings, personal time-off).
- Maintain clear communication with other team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (email, chat, docs and sheets).
- Lactation Education training preferred.
- Childbirth Education training preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of historical trauma and colonization.
- Strong background in health equity and understanding of how structural oppression impacts health disparities.
- Sensitive awareness of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Ability to understand and resolve complex problems.
- Ability to work with conflicting deadlines.
- 15-20 years of personal or professional experience working closely with American Indian/Alaska Native, Pacific Islander and/or Native Hawaiian communities.
- Strong verbal and written communication and skills.
- Frequent standing, stopping, bending, pulling and pushing.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Must have a flexible schedule and supportive lifestyle to meet the needs of doula work.
- Must pass a background investigation, including relevant criminal history.
- Must have access to a car, valid driver’s license and full coverage car insurance (mileage will be reimbursed).
DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Samoan, Tongan, Marshallese or other Pacific Islander language skills preferred.
- Experience or training with reproductive health in Indigenous communities.
- Training or background as a doula, midwife, or other perinatal support practices.

COMPENSATION:
0.5 Contract Part-Time Position (temporary) is $55/hour up to a maximum of $4,500 monthly for services rendered. Consultant will receive $1,500 per birth attended with no maximum births.
BENEFITS:
As long as an employee is over 0.75 FTE, we provide full coverage for employee’s health, dental, and vision insurance coverage. Hummingbird IFS is a child-friendly workplace, and staff may bring their baby/child as long as they are able to do their job duties at the same time. We try to provide a child/baby-safe workplace as well.
WORK SCHEDULE:
BirthKeepers (doulas) work Monday through Friday with some evenings and weekends depending on client needs and community events. BirthKeepers are on-call for births 24/7 for clients who are 37 wks gestation until birth; they may need to attend births prior to 37 wks in case of premature birth or other pregnancy complications. A rotating on-call calendar for birth back-up is managed by the Department Supervisor.
LOCATION:
Our office is in Columbia City. While BirthKeepers spend their work hours primarily with the client for in-person home visits, it is expected that BirthKeepers are in the office on Mondays. This position requires working at community events and home visits throughout King, Pierce and South Snohomish counties and on local reservations.
