About Program
Our Pilimakua Family Connections Department holds monthly Indigenous Families Community Connection Events in King County, WA usually on a weekend. They are events with the community to bring families together and do cultural activities rooted in child development.

During this time, our Indigenous families gather together to socialize with our children around culturally-centered developmental activities and information. Together, we celebrate the progress our children have been making and collectively think about how we can use their strengths to work on any areas of growth. We also make sure to have Developmental Screening, Information, and Services available.

Who can attend?

In order to attend a Pilimakua Indigenous Families Community Connection Event, a family must:
  • Be pregnant or have a child under 5 years old

This program serves Indigenous families from the prenatal period through the child’s fifth year of life (28 weeks pregnant to 5 years old).
  • Identify as AmericanI ndian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Pacific Islander

In order to attend our Pilimakua Indigenous Families Community Connections Events, the child and at least one parent/caregiver must identify as Indigenous (American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander). Our program wants to help address the disproportionate effects of racism and colonization on our Indigenous parents by supporting the Indigenous dyad (parent/caregiver and child).
  • Live in King, Pierce, or South Snohomish County

Pilimakua Indigenous Families Community Connection Events can look like…

  • Connecting with other Indigenous Families, community members, & children
  • Developmentally-appropriate Indigenous cultural activities to do with your children

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my non-Indigenous partner/co-parent/spouse/other family members come?

Yes! The more, the merrier! These events are specifically designed for Indigenous families inclusive of non-Indigenous partners/other family members; we never want to leave out anyone in the family. Please have them come with you!

Is there transportation support?

We do offer some gas gift cards at each PIFCC Event that are on a reservation basis. We do prioritize Pilimakua relatives/clients and any relatives/clients enrolled in any other Hummingbird program first. Please ask your Hummingbird staff member to reserve you one or you can email pilimakuaevents@hummingbird-ifs.org to see if there are any more available. If you do reserve one or we have extra leftover, when you get to the PIFCC Event, just ask a Pilimakua Staff Member for a gas gift card and we will sign one out to your family.

What if my child or I have allergies or dietary restrictions? Can they be accommodated for food?

We try to balance all the known-allergies/dietary restrictions of those that come frequently, such as dairy-free, gluten-free, and nut-free options. However, if you have a specific allergy or dietary restriction and are going to come, please let us know by emailing pilimakuaevents@hummingbird-ifs.org

Do I need to be enrolled in Pilimakua Home Visiting or Indigenous Emotional Wellness to attend?

No! Our Pilimakua Indigenous Family Community Connection Events came out of the need to expand our programming beyond just the actively enrolled Relatives in our Home Visiting and IEW programs. We want to serve as many families as possible within our urban Indigenous community.

What should I bring?

Just your family, including your kiddos, and anything else you usually travel with with your children. We always recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to help cut down on plastic bottle use.
