As the Indigenous Curriculum & Special Projects Department within Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services, our goal is to prepare perinatal and early childhood education peer support staff within our Indigenous communities to improve their advocacy, educational, and culturally-ground practices, and effect broader change within early parenting families in our Indigenous communities.
We focus on capturing the community “magic” at Hummingbird to align our in-organization programs as well as support other organizations within our AI/AN/NH/PI communities.
In our Curriculum & Special ProjectsDevelopment, we want to ensure that we are staying community-driven and accountable to our Indigenous (American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) community. To do this, we have built in the following structures to our development process:
Curriculum Development Communities
These are our groups of our fellow Indigenous community members that help guide the process and/or develop the curriculum themselves.
Community Listening Sessions
We are regularly holding informal and formal community listening sessions with our Indigenous community about our curriculum and special projects.
Hummingbird’s Cultural Advisory Council
During some of our monthly CAC meetings, we will be asking our Elders and CAC members for their feedback.
Hummingbird Staff Involvement
Hummingbird IFS has an all-Indigenous staff. During Staff Meetings and other times, Hummingbird Staff will be giving their input on the curriculum and special projects throughout the development.
